Last Of The Legion

At last I have finally finished a project.....well I finished these at the end of 2015 and when I say finish I still have the generals bases to complete.

The army consists of 4 'legions' each of 3 units of Hastati, 3 units of Princepts, 1 unit of Triarii and 1 of horse.  A very good size consular army.

I am contemplating adding elephants or I could just use the ones I have in my Numidian Army.

All figures are WestWind War and Empire and they are just great.....

Punic Wars Roman

Two more units of my Punic Wars project.....

This is a unit of Triarii, the most senior legionaries in the army.  In this period they were armed with thrusting spear not pilum.

The cavalry or Equestrians, a small body of mounted men recruited from the richest families in Rome.  each legion normally had only one unit of Equestrians.

Roman Hastati!

The first major part of my Punic Wars Roman army has been completed.  I fought through the basing, which is my least favorite part of the hobby!

Here are 192 Hastati, divided into 4 Legions each legion has 48 Hastati.  As you can see I have gone for four different shield colours Red and White will be the Roman Legions whilst the Blue and Yellow will be the Allied Legions

A little closer, the War and Empire figures are very nice with plenty of variety, I think there are at least 6 different legionaries, including two with swords.

A rear view and as you can see there is plenty of colour.  I have gone with the school of thought that the self equipped legionaries would have been in a variety of smocks.  I have chosen 5 colours white, red, blue, green and yellow.

As you can see they make a very pleasing sight!

Continuing the theme the Principes will have the mix of coloured smocks but the Triarii, in the Roman legions will be all the same colour as will the cavalry.  I may still mix th smock colours in the Allied legions.

Only 192 Principes, 64 Triarii and 48 Cavalry to do!

Punic Wars Roman

This is what 192 Roman and Allied Hastati look like.  They are all painted and given a good coat of Army Painter Dark Tone, also they are based into their four 'Legions' Red and White shields are Roman.  Blue and Yellow are Allied.

Next up is my least favorite part of building my armies, the basing!!

Punic Wars, the Roman Republic Army Velites

So the painting has begun and I start with the Roman light foot, Velites.

My Roman forces will consist of 4 legions, 2 Roman and 2 allied.  Each legion will consist of 2 small units of Triarii (FOG 2 bases each), 3 units of Hastati (FOG 4 bases each), 3 units of Principes (FOG 4 bases each), 1 unit of Velites (FOG 6 bases) and 1 unit of Cavalry(FOG 4 bases).. That gives each legion 164 foot and 12 mounted.

Velites base sprayed and ready for the brush.

Roman Velites, 'White Shield Legion'

Allied Velites, 1st legion

Allied Velites

Allied Velites, 2nd legion

Out of interest the figures were base sprayed, as above, then block painted, given a coat of Army Painter 'Dark Tone', then based, flocked and given a coat of matt varnish spray. Simples!!

Next up the Hastati, all 192 of them....

2015!

Happy New Year to you all, a little late but......

Well I have just got back to my workplace, a dark cellar in a very far off country and back to my painting table....it helps keep me sane!

Projects for this year.....
10mm League of Augsburg
10mm ACW
15mm Punic Wars Romans
15mm British Expeditionary Force for All Quiet on the Martian Front
and may be a few commissions from PAW club members

Please do stick with the blog and comments are always welcome!

First on my table

A nice pile of Punic Wars Romans, just over 500 figures in all to represent 4 legions.  These are brand new sculpts from West Wind Productions, War & Empire.  I signed up for their kickstarter last year and received the figures just before Christmas.  The minis are absolutely great! The are crisp, detailed and look great painted.  I have started on the light foot but not finished the basing yet....I will post once done.
