League of Augsburg Spanish

Well I have finished my Spanish contingent for the League of Augsburg.
As always they are the great Pendraken LoA range.

The last of the Spanish contingent.

 Tercio De Deynes

 Nuevo Dragoons mounted

 Nuevo Dragoons on foot

Artillery, I wish I had painted the carriages a dark wood rather than red as I could have used them for more forces.

And the leadership, two general bases.  Could be used by most sides.

  1. Lovely - very meaty looking "tercio" there!

Wandered in from Andrew's 10mm Facebook community, btw.

Great reference, I was considering a couple of units of Spanish for Twilight of the Sun King!

Was that a job with a "magic" wash for shading?

    1. Hi Pixie,

I use block painting and the Army Painter Dark Tone brushed on.

It looks dark, heavy and shinny when you apply it but the colours do pop out once a matt varnish is applied

  4. Is that the AP from the can, turps based? I liked the finish but the stink and the brush cleaning after was prohibitive!

These days I use B&Q wood varnish, similar result, a quarter the price ;)

Not tried the less noxious AP stains though, I must say.

And it's a pleasure, Andy! I prefer to mention where I'd seen a blog if I comment, feels a bit rude to turn up unannounced and unknown ;)

    1. Nathan,
Yes it is the turps based, the smell is not that bad and the cleaning is very easy.

i'd like to try B&Q but, its just taking the leap lol. What shade do you use?

    2. Heh, I got banned from using it in the house it was so bad! If you're a persistent painter of enamels and user of turps then it's probably not a biggy but I found it overwhelming (and the other half and then toddler were *very* unimpressed!).

I did use their old range Quick Dry Varnish for interior wood (usually in Oak) which was pretty dark but they've just changed the range.

I've gone onto what's now B&Q own brand "Colours Varnish" interior wood in oak - same wood colour but much lighter, and I think I prefer it.

For a fiver it's worth a try! I did like the effect the AP stuff has, but it was pricey and too awkward in use. A low vocs, water clean, non-smelly version for a quarter of the price suites me better ;)

    3. Pleasure! I've just done two very quick Savoy foot regiments, actually - if I can find how to pop a piccy in I will, if not I'll pop 'em on my Facebook commissions page :)

    5. Right, have a bit more useful link (he says hopefully!) - technique was spray white, pick out detail, wash in B&W wood varnish as above.

They need flags & dullcote but are otherwise done!

  5. I think Spanish generals wore purple with white cuffs at this time? Or at least a painting from the Siege of Gibraltar says so. Admittedly painted in the 1800s I think.
