15mm Napoleonics-Swiss and Italian

A long time project, slow burn at times but having a little resurgent at the moment. For some crazy reason I want to try and collect all the allied formations of the Grande Armee of 1812, I know what a stupid idea..............

I have painted or should I say touched up two battalions of Swiss and two battalions of Italians.

I bought these figure ages ago from Mark at Stonewall Figures from Newquay

https://www.stonewallfigures.co.uk

Mark is a great guy and has a great range figures and models of many ears, check his stall out when you see him at the shows

These are some of his battalion packs they come with a 'wargamer' leve; paint job and are very good value.

I touch up the paint, add a wash and then highlight so that they fit in with my existing collection.  It certainly does speed up collecting a project and I need all the help I can get.

So the work in progress, painted but not based.

Below is the 1st Battalion, 2nd Line Regiment.

Now 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment

The two individual figures out front will be the designated skirmish base.

I'll post completed pictures once home.

Kings Of War in 15mm

In August my 10 year old son and I played our first game of Kings of War.  I kept it simple, I'm new to the rules as well, so no magic, no objectives just a stand up battle.

We played Kingdom of Men(Empire) against Orcs.  It was quite a large battle, several thousand points and lots of figures on the table, we both love the sight of large armies...

Obviously mistakes were made, rules forgotten but as an introduction game we really enjoyed it and my son wanted to keep going, even though my Orcs were decimating his feeble humans lol

So the pictures.....

The mighty Orc hordes stretch as far as the eye can see!

The mammoths counted as non flying Krudgers

Line breaker trolls, very useful

The Empire army, colourful, proud and stubborn but mostly destroyed by the end lol

The heart of the Empire forces, the pike blocks

Shot troops supported by halberdiers and double handed swordsmen.

The proud Empire General

The line breakers surge forward to make holes in the Empire line.

They took some damage on the way in from the handgunners...but regeneration is a great thing!

The Krudgers hit the empire line, casualties all around.

The only mounted elements of the Orc horde meet Empire mounted shot....they didn't like it.

The Trolls continue their advance into the center of the Empire line.

Empire mounted shot get a little too close to the Trolls and paid the price in the next round.

Pike in the flank....I'll let you guess the rest.

Empire pike and swordsmen.

Orc regiment hits an Empire giant.

The Empire 'dead'

The Orc 'dead'

Overall it was a good fun game, as I said my son just wanted to keep playing.  Whish for me was a very good thing as living in southern Portugal wargaming opponents are few and far between!

We will play again, when I'm home next and I will re-read the rules not that much more will stick but thats just the way my mind works.

The Orcs are all Battle Valor, great figures.  The Empire are Blue Moon Italian Wars, some Old Glory and the giants are old Marauder, yes they are that old, Empire Trolls.

Solo Hail Caesar Game-Successors Clash

This battle was fought many months ago but I just kept forgetting to add it to the blog lol

I have used my Xyston 15/18mm Raphia collection with a few extra 'Persian' types thrown in.

Now as this was a solo game and me not being 100% confident with Hail Caesar rules I took my time and made plenty of mistakes lol.  One thing I did add in to offer a little bit of randomness was use a 'Bolt Action' style activation system.

Each division commander was given a numbered token, a corresponding numbered toke was placed in the PAW dice bag and then they were drawn out randomly. The token drawn meaning that the respective commander was activated that turn, not perfect but it added a little something for solo play.  One thing I did allow was crossing and closing fire by ranged armed troops.

I really enjoyed this game and I do enjoy Hail Caesar rules, easy and fun to play.

Now for the pictures....

The armies array for battle, Ptolemy on the left and Seleucid on the right.
Sorry for the light horse basing they are from my Achaemenid Persian collection which are not complete yet!

A view from the Seleucid side.

And a view from the Ptolemaic side

When I put the armies out they 'felt' bigger lol

Opening moves with Seleucid taking the offensive.

Poor Eastern archers about to get hammered by Galatian warband!

The Galatian's hit the Seleucid light foot and begin to make inroads.  The skull markers are the casualty markers, each has a number on it indicating how the unit is doing.

The cavalry on the flanks get to grips.  The red tokens next to the round based commander is his randon command number drawn from the bag.

Seleucid elephants hit Ptolemy's pike! I don't think it went well for them lol

Clash of the beasts.

Ptolemaic elephants clash with mercenary Greek cavalry again sorry for the unfinished bases.

The heart of Ptolemy's army.

I think I called it a day here, after a good few hours.  The Ptolemaic wings were in no fit state to continue so they chose the sensible option and retired.

The markers I use.  The wooden skulls are casualty markers, the 'dead' represent 'disordered' one marker, 'shaken' two markers.
I made the dead tokens out of spare or broken figures.

The markers in action.

For a first attempt at a solo game, I do miss my wargames club I quite enjoyed it.  The random activation, although not perfect worked quite well and definitely added a different aspect to the game.

Undead So Far

So the first batch of 3D Sculpt Undead have been completed, this is a follow on for the batch painted in July.

They are based on 80mm frontage.  I play Kings of War and probably the fantasy version of Hail Caesar.

The Grave Guard and Skeletal Warriors I kept on their six figure strips, basically the printing does not allow separation.  But I do like the dense look and I will order the rest in strips.

Grave Guard

Skeletal Warriors

Wraiths, these I cut down into singles, doubles and triples as best I could.  I wanted the dispersed look, I think it looks better.

As you can see from my previous post the remainder I ordered were single sculpts.

The Zombies, again cut down of the strips.  These figures are just fun!

Skeletal knights, what can I say but great figures, again!

I painted these guys up using Warhammer Old World colour schemes just because I liked the look and thought it would be good Empire troops facing their fallen predecessors.

I ordered the remainder of the Wraiths, previous post, Zombies and Ghouls.  All individual prints and number a couple of hundred figures.  Once I have painted these I will order the Grave Guard and Skeletal Warriors.
