Seven Years War Russian

I am putting new life into an old project, but very slowly lol

These are 3 8pdr Unicorn guns for the Russian armies of the Seven Years War.  I am re-looking at my SYW collection and beginning to arrange armies on actual Orbats.  I'n not sure which battle I will base the Russians on

As always these are the great Pendraken minis

15mm Marian Roman, a commission

As part of my mix and match painting schedule I have taken a commission from a PAW member to paint up a Marian Roman army.  Luckily he is in no rush as the figures have sat in a cupboard for about 15 years lol

These are Essex Miniatures, once the staple of most wargamers but now, although still good, a little 'lifeless'

I must admit though, they were good to paint.
They are based for FOG, he's game of choice.

15mm A Very British Civil War-AVCBW

First out of the 'Pick and Mix' box was a bag of Battlefront 15mm WW11 Finns.  These guys are their assault engineers with 'satchel bombs' and flamethrowers.

The Finns have been painted us a Communists/Socialsts representing No.4 Peoples Assault Column.

They have the added support of a small Soviet tankett.

The Assault Column, lead by a brave flag(target) wielding Commissar.

Due to their 'Germanic' style of equipment they adorn themselves with red armbands and lines on their helmets.
No body wants 'friendly fire'!

On The Painting Table

With the Raphia project at a stage where I field two good sized armies on the table I have decided to diversify my painting, just to break up the monotony (although the last Raphia units are among them).

This is my 'Pick and Mix' box with unit packs from many projects, armies and lead piles that I have sat in my lead mountain!!

As well as this I have a 15mm Marian Roman army to paint, as a commission for a PAW member.

My 'Pick and Mix' Box lol

Successors on the Table

The first run out for my Raphia project armies.

Whilst home I played my first game with the armies I have been painting and collecting for the Raphia project.  One thing I did discover while I was sorting the the armies out is that the project is not completed (elephants aside) and I need to paint 3 more pike phalanxes, I have the figures thanks to Stuart at Colonel Bills (http://shop.colonelbills-store.co.uk) and will hopefully get them painted this rotation.

The game was played at my local gaming club, Plymouth Association or Wargamers (PAW) with Stepehen Luscombe using Hail Caesar rules which he is very familiar with.

Here are the photos, sorry for the naked bases, they will be completed at some stage....

The two armies line up for battle.

 The Seleucid phalanx line.

The rear of the Seleucid phalanx.

The Ptolemaic line, the 'supported' pike phalanxs are not an historical set up but are in the rules.  It made no real difference to the battle as by the time the pikes clashed they had moved out to a single line.

Ptolemy's pike massed pike block and elephants.

The opening moves and the lines draw closer.

Seluecid Agema cavalry close on the levy Egyptian pike.  That was me forgetting that cavalry can not charge formed, un-disorded, pikes...

Seluecid Agema in the foreground and the crest of the finest Corps in the back ground!

Seleucid command and elephants on the left flank.

Ptolemy companions and Greek cavalry on their left flank advancing through the Egyptian ruins.

 Ptolemy Guard Phalanx

Seleucid Agema and Companions on their left flank.

Seleucid cavalry and elephants face off against the Ptolemy Egyptian pikes and elephants.

Ptolemaic Companion cavalry.

The game was a close run thing and ended as a draw, with a slight advantage to the Seleucid side.
Hail Caesar plaid out very well and the game lasted for about 4 hours (all the time we had) and we could have got through a few more rounds of I was more familiar with the rules.
I will definitely be using Hail Caesar again as I really enjoyed it.
